Luxury Holidays in Europe
Luxury holidays in Europe are what we plan most. A long weekend in Paris, a week on Lake Como followed by a few days in Venice, a villa in the Greek islands for the summer, or a chalet in Courchevel for February: most of our clients travel to Europe several times a year, and each trip deserves the right hotel, the right room and the right week. Our Travel Designers know the hotels on this page well, and we book them every week.
Why Choose Europe?
Nowhere else puts so much within three hours of London. Riviera beaches, Alpine resorts, Renaissance cities and island coves are all a short flight away, and many are reachable by train. The hotels are some of the best in the world, from grand palaces that have welcomed guests for over a century to small, design-led hotels on quiet stretches of coast. That makes Europe as easy for a long weekend as for a month-long summer, and many clients combine two or three countries in a single trip.
Where to Go in Europe
These are the regions we book most often, and the hotels our clients return to. Each country has its own page with every hotel we recommend there.
Italy
Italy is the country our clients return to most. Lake Como and Venice pair well in a week, Tuscany suits a slower stay, and the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Sardinia cover the summer. We book Aman Venice on the Grand Canal, Hotel Il Pellicano on the Tuscan coast, Borgo Egnazia in Puglia, and Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, Amalfi Coast, where our Belmond Bellini Club membership adds breakfast, a hotel credit and an upgrade where available. See our luxury holidays to Italy.
France and Monaco
Paris rewards a long weekend at Le Bristol, the Hôtel Ritz Paris or Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel. In summer the Riviera is the draw: Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc at Antibes and Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel, where our Four Seasons Preferred Partner status adds benefits to every stay. Provence suits a slower week at Villa La Coste, and Monaco is a short drive from Nice, with Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo on Place du Casino. In winter, Courchevel has the greatest concentration of palace hotels in the Alps: see our luxury ski holidays. More on France and Monaco.
Greece, Turkey and Cyprus
The eastern Mediterranean has the longest summer in Europe, from May into October. In Greece we book Amanzoe in the Peloponnese, Santa Marina and Kalesma on Mykonos, The Romanos at Costa Navarino for families, and Four Seasons Astir Palace on the Athens Riviera. Across the water, Bodrum has become one of the most sought-after summer addresses, with The Bodrum EDITION, Mandarin Oriental Bodrum and Amanruya. In Cyprus, Anassa is our favourite for families. More on Greece, Turkey and Cyprus.
Spain and the Balearics
Madrid has come of age as a city break, and Rosewood Villa Magna is our first choice there. On Mallorca, Cap Rocat occupies a former fortress on the bay of Palma, and La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel sits in the hillside village of Deià. On the mainland, Marbella Club and Finca Cortesin suit families and golfers, and on Ibiza, Seven Pines looks out to Es Vedrà. More on Spain.
Switzerland and the Alps
The Alps work in both seasons: skiing from December to April, then lakes, walking and spas in summer. We book Gstaad Palace and Badrutt’s Palace in St Moritz for winter, The Dolder Grand above Zurich, and the Bürgenstock Hotel above Lake Lucerne for a summer week. More on Switzerland and our luxury ski holidays.
The UK and Europe by Train
Some of our favourite European trips start at home. In London we book Claridge’s and The Lanesborough; in the country, Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and Gleneagles. Europe’s great trains turn the journey into the holiday: the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express from London to Venice, La Dolce Vita Orient Express through Italy, and the Britannic Explorer and Royal Scotsman in Britain. Our guide to luxury train journeys covers each one. More on the United Kingdom.
Where Should You Stay in Europe?
We choose the hotel for the trip, not the other way round. For a city, the grand hotels close to everything; for the coast, a resort with its own beach and space for children; for a celebration, a villa or a suite with a view. Many of the hotels on this page belong to programmes such as Four Seasons Preferred Partner, Rosewood Elite and the Belmond Bellini Club, which add breakfast, hotel credit and upgrades depending on the hotel and dates, at the same rate as booking direct. Tell us who is travelling and what matters most, and we will suggest two or three hotels that fit.
Planning Your Trip to Europe
The practical points, answered.
Getting There
Most of Europe is two to four hours from London, with direct flights to Nice, Milan, Venice, Rome, Geneva, Zurich, Palma, Malaga, Athens and the Greek islands in summer. Paris is two and a quarter hours by Eurostar. For the fastest door-to-door journey, our private jet team can fly you straight to smaller airports such as Olbia, Mykonos or Sion for the Swiss Alps.
Entry and Documents
British passport holders do not need a visa for short stays in the Schengen area: up to 90 days in any 180. Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System records fingerprints and a photo at the border on your first entry. ETIAS, a €20 online travel authorisation valid for three years, is due to start in the last quarter of 2026; we will tell you when you need it.
Getting Around
Fast trains link most European capitals, and we use them between cities, with a private driver for the coast and countryside. We arrange helicopter transfers to the Alps and the Riviera, and private boats for the Amalfi Coast, the Greek islands and the Bodrum peninsula.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Europe?
It depends on the trip. For the Mediterranean coast, May, June and September are the best months: warm, with the sea warm enough to swim and fewer crowds than July and August. Greece and Turkey stay warm into October. The Alps are at their best for skiing from mid-January to mid-March, and for walking and lakes from June to September. Cities such as Paris, London, Rome and Vienna work all year, and December brings Christmas markets and festive hotels.
Why Book Your European Holiday with Berkeley Travel
A dedicated Travel Designer plans the whole trip: the hotel and the room, flights, transfers, restaurant tables in the weeks they sell out, and guides who know their subject. Through our trusted partners, stays at many of these hotels include added benefits such as breakfast, a hotel credit or an upgrade on arrival, depending on the hotel and dates. Our concierge team looks after the details before and during your stay, from a table at a sold-out restaurant to a boat for the day.
FAQ
Luxury Holidays in Europe: FAQs
The questions our clients ask most often when planning a luxury holiday in Europe.
It depends on the season and who is travelling. For summer, the Amalfi Coast, the French Riviera, Mykonos and Mallorca; for culture, Venice, Florence and Paris; for winter, Courchevel, St Moritz and Gstaad. Lake Como and the Peloponnese suit couples who want something quieter. Tell us what you enjoy and we will suggest the right place and hotel.
May, June and September for the Mediterranean, when it is warm without the crowds of July and August. Mid-January to mid-March for skiing. The cities work all year.
No. British passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180 in the Schengen area without a visa. The EU Entry/Exit System records fingerprints and a photo on your first entry, and ETIAS, a €20 online authorisation, is due to start in the last quarter of 2026. We will let you know when you need it.
Yes, and many clients do. Popular combinations include Lake Como and Venice with a few days in Switzerland, Paris and the Riviera, Athens and the Greek islands, and Mallorca with Madrid. We plan the route, the trains or flights between them and the transfers at each end.
Greece, Mallorca, the Costa del Sol, Puglia and Cyprus all have resorts with kids’ clubs, shallow beaches and space. The Romanos at Costa Navarino, Anassa, Marbella Club and Borgo Egnazia are among our favourites, and the Alps are excellent for family ski holidays.
